From Page to Screen: Flowers in the Attic

It was probably inevitable. I mean, now that 50 Shades is being made into a movie the floodgates have opened and the bar of "questionable taste" has been....adjusted.

Without further ado, I give you the trailer for Flowers in the Attic.



Lest you are surprised Flowers hasn't been made into a movie before now, rest assured: a 1987 adaptation was released, but only hinted at the incest that is integral to the plot (the part that was 90% of the reason most of us weren't allowed to read the book).  According to star Mason Dye, this adaptation will be different, saying "we stay very true to the book." 

The new film adaptation will premiere on Lifetime, January 18, 2014.  Incidentally, that leaves you plenty of time to read the book before you pop your popcorn.

Next on the list of cool books being made into movies, another chapter from Frank Baum's Oz books: Oz: The Great and Powerful. Check it out:



The cast is loaded with stars: James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams, which is all well and good, but how cool do these special effects look??
The movie is scheduled for release on March 8, 2013.

So...  In a post-Twilight world, wherever will we get our Kirsten Stewart fix?
Answer: film adaptations of Jack Kerouac novels.  Not bad, eh?

Initial reviews of the film as a whole are good--and that will have to sustain us all the way through until almost Christmas: the release date is December 21st.  Ouch.
Good thing you've got ye faithful librarian to point you to the book to keep you occupied...

From Page to Screen -- Anna Karenina

So, there have been a bunch of screen adaptations of Anna Karenina, but here's one with a unique spin.  Watch this "featurette" clip for an upcoming adaptation....

...right.  I'm not quite sure what to make of that, either.
Anyway, in case you've not done so already, try to read the book.  I'm linking my favorite translation--by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (very cool story--husband and wife translating team--he's American, she's Russian--they work together and come up with these incredibly easy to read, engaging translations of what can otherwise be kinda' daunting undertakings--their work on Dostoyevsky is really remarkable).  The film debuts on November 9.
So....  Yep--starting today, that's plenty of time to tackle a Russian classic!

From Page to Screen -- Life of Pi

So here's one that's been a long time in the making...

And I'm thinking, after watching the trailer, that I may have missed some key scenes in the book (glowing whale? Does anyone else not remember that bit?)--the good news is that I (and you, of course) still have time to (re-)read the book!  The movie is set to release on December 14 of this year.
Oh, and did I mention it's by Ang Lee?  That means I'm pretty sure it's going to be good and am officially willing to take a shot, whatever's up with the glowing whale.  Also?  In the role of Richard Parker?  Seriously spot-on.

Color me intrigued... The folks who brought you the mega-production that was Moulin Rouge are now taking on F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby!



While we might have awhile to wait for this one (release is slated for Christmas day), I must say that the idea of a soundtrack including Kanye West and Jay-Z? Combined with Leonardo DiCaprio in the role of Jay Gatsby? My curiosity is piqued...

The good news? There's officially plenty of time to read the book!

Hey--
Remember when we all went crazy over Edward and Bella? And we all became diehard fans of Stephenie Meyer?
Good! Because it wasn't that long ago and I'd be worried if you didn't.
More to the point of a blog post, though, here's the good news for the Meyer devotees: her other book, The Host, is currently in movie production!


Some of Meyer's fans were disappointed by the book, in comparison to her wildly popular Twilight series, but others swear that The Host is superior in every possible way.
What do you think? Warning: try not to decide based just on the movie trailer. Because honestly? Could it be anymore vague???

On my list of Books to Read Before Seeing the Movie is this: My Week With Marilyn.

It caught my attention several months ago, and I promptly forgot about it, but now that the trailer has resurfaced, well, it's time to get cracking.



I mean, how could you resist this? It's Marilyn Monroe, with a smaller role for Emma Watson, formerly of Harry Potter fame and Judi Dench! It got a warm reception at the New York Film Festival, and will be available for the rest of us on November 23. So, read fast!

Okay, it's true: some of us really do live under rocks. I have a nice cozy little moss-lined spot that I've been so busy redecorating, I didn't even realize that a new trailer for The Hunger Games was released earlier this week.

Sara Gruen's book, "Water for Elephants", has been made into a movie that will be released April 22. Her book about circus life during the depression has won numerous awards, the Quill and Alex Awards to name a few. It was on the New York Times best seller list for 12 weeks in 2006. There is much anticipation about this film especially with the well known actors in it. There's still time to read the book before the movie.

Finite Incantatem

The journey that began in June of 1997 with the British release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US) draws to its conclusion this July with the final movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Will the movie live up the magic of a series that had elementary students (and many adults too!) consuming 800+ page books in overnight reading marathons? We will find out July 15, 2011.

If you are among the scores of Suzanne Collins devotees, the news is good! The Hunger Games, under the direction of Gary Ross, is scheduled to begin production this spring. While the premiere date is still theoretical, the bigger question is "who is going to play Katniss?" And a great question it is! Rumors are circulating, but Hailee Steinfeld (of True Grit fame) has confirmed that she is in the running!
